The History of Punganuru

According to the information available from the elders of the town and other relevant sources, the town is named after a local diety Punganuru, who save the town from huge floods prior to 5 to 6 hundred years ago. To remember her services along with her other two sisters Subbamma and Rangamma and elder brother Royappa, the Town is named after PUNGAMMA – and called as Punganuruu. Even to day the four tanks dug and built by these four are around the town, named after their names, and they are the main source for keeping ground water level intact around the town.
